If you select the Freehand Select Mode (the Lasso) and place your first click at one one end what you wish to measure and then take your cursor to the other end of what you wish to measure, BEFORE clicking, check out the bottom right, beside the word Length, you will see the distance. Once you click at this location, it resets to zero. I wish they would just put the same measuring tool into Editor, but this is a workaround in the meantime. HTH
