About 7am this morning I was woken up by our cat Gandalf running about making a lot of noise .He had already been let out but I soon discovered he had bought back a playmate upstairs to his bed, a RAT & he had lost it under the bookcase.Locked him & the dog outside & proceded to take everything out of the bookcase so we could move the bookcase out to get the rat ,but the rat ran up the bookcase to the top ,where Gandalfs litter box is kept when he can go outside because the dog scatters the litter all over the floor. The litter tray has a cover with a swinging door & the rat went in through the door.husband guarded the door while I got the packaging tape to stick across the bottom of the door to stop the rat escaping .Husband got the job of taking the captured rat outside where he let it go down the street.

It will be interesting to see what Gandalf does to night when he smells rat in his litter tray.
A few months ago we came home to find Gandalf with his paws under the edge of the bookcase & discovered a rat .That one ran down the stairs after the bookcase was emptied out & eventually out the front door with our help.
Once upon a time Gandalf wouldn't come in the doggy door ,only went out the doggy door . Wish he still did ,it meant no playmates came inside.

That is hilarious story...I can imagine the tempest at your house. Just glad it was you and not me, or I would have been the one on top of the bookcase, or something taller! Our cat will barely go out on the deck, but we still have to watch out for him getting skinks. They like to sun on the deck. Old slow cat becomes a speed demon if he spies one.

Our cat had once brought a little shrew inside. She could escape and run under the old big bureau. We've locked the cat out of the living room and builded a way with some shelves from the brueau back to the terrace door. Need some time to convince tha mouse that she can come out and leave the house with no further harm. I will never forgett that special smell of a mouse in agony...

I know it was not at all funny to you, but you helped me to start my day with laughter and some interesting memories. We had a cat who felt a need to give my mother gifts. Unfortunately they were always dead rodents she left in one of my mother's slippers during the night.

As a teenager we had a Siamese cat who could open the wire door with his paws & he us to bring in lizards ,crickets etc in & dutifully deposit them under my mothers dressing gown while she was watching tv.

Your cat brings in fun toys! lol
I wonder if the cat just loves a good challenge. Rats are much smarter than mice, add the size...one very smart and large toy!
Thankfully, when I had cats, most of my cats were sufficiently entertained by the pen light we would use. My Bengal would still have to run as fast as lightening through the house and leap to the top of the staircase wall. I think it was a "king of the hill" kind of game he played. I am so glad he didn't need live toys!

Hilarious. We had a neighbor whose cat brought in a snake which then escaped into the house. I never found out what kind of snake because in that lady's mind all snakes were poisonous. She spend several sleepless nights before the exterminator found it.

Australia has some of the most venimous snakes in the world but thankfully we have never seen a snake here in 35 yrs.

May not be so funny to you, but I sure got a laugh! So thankful our dog never brough in anything except grasshoppers, which she quickly ate if we tried to get them away! She left the moles on the back patio! Wonder if that's the same rat that just likes a game of hide & seek!!

Thanks for the story. I would have been out of the room & left the cat to catch the rat again. One of my cat once brought in a mouse, but it was dead and later he brought me a gift of a dead mole, but nothing alive. I feel for you.

Did you read my wild story about the mousie trying to run fast enough to get out of my round bathub (as if it were a velodrome for bicycles. Meanwhile, Sugartoes, faithful guard cat, stood beside tub and WATCHED, mesmerized. I'm shouting," Sugar, MOUSE. Sugar?" But I had to knock the mouse out and bag him to take him outside! Too much food in the cat bowl.

Thank you for the amusing post. I can put up with spiders, snakes but a rat I cannot take. I think you were extremely brave :)
