How big is the rope inside of these? This is a excellent idea.

It is one half centimeter. And the rope is woven very loose

Looks great, and I can't believe this is your first try. So well done! I have seen some baskets made with this technique, but never tried it myself. I thought they were hand-stitched, but now I see it is done by machine. I would not have guessed. Nice job!

I think it's close line cord they use, here is a tutorial on how it is done for baskets, same technique is used for placemat.

I love these my mom used them all while growing up. You can't find them in stores anymore. Thanks for the link. I think I might try to do one. Hope your wrists are ok!

Yes I made a bali basket and a bowl, they really look great as the material varies. I used jelly rolls for the projects that I got for a great price on Ebay.
