I need your opinion Please.
I saw in a store a place mat sewed on the Serger instead of binding .what do you think??I tried using 3 different thread colors so when you turned it over it would look different please comment Thank-you .Oh the design is from Vickis site and its a wee bit thick for here but i loved it!!Carolyn

it looks nice. I would recommend using 'wooly nylon' in the top loop. Wooly Nylon is a 'puffy' like thread that will fill in your spaces and the placemat will not show through the threads. some manufactures call it something different, but still the same thread. It's what the manufacturers use. Looks very nice as is, just a suggestion.

I have done serger they are not as dressy this way to me but sometimes this way just fits the moment, look etc. I love your colors and Vicki's design. I broke lower looper once doing placemats. Hubby fixed it for me after I ordered part.

Your design and colors are very pretty but I personally do not like the serged edge. To me it does not look finished. This is not meant to be a criticism of your work, just me stating a personal preference.

Love this place mat, and the embroidery design is beautiful! Can't give you my opinion on the border made with your serger as I can't see it clearly. The place mats I bought from the shops have borders made by serger and they look ok to me, but if you want to give them as a gift to someone special, you may prefer to bind them.

just an Idea:sandwich Front and Back right Sides faceing,together,but leave an Opening,then turn Inside out.Topstich Edge,that will close the Opening.That way the Mats will wear better in the Wash.Hugs Ursula

Love your placemat. My personal choice is not to do it with the serger. If I could master the skill to do it as nice as you with the binding that is the way I would go. Unfortunately I can not even cut straight which makes it difficult. For that reason I do what Castor suggests.

Hi Carolyn...love the mat and design...not so sure about the serged edge...if it were me, I would put back fabric on the top with the right sides together, then sew around leaving an opening to turn, turn right side out, then hand sew the opening...then top stitch around to finish...

Love your design and fabric. I think using a serger would look really neat for denim or burlap or any other fabric that frays. After serging leave a half inch or so to fray the edges. Other wise I like binding or the other methods mentioned here for leaving a small opening then top stitching after turning. Great job and thinking out of the box!

I forgot to say, serge without the cutter engaged. Then you can fray the edges. LOL

I agree with the binding or turning inside out, turning to right side and stitching around. I find the serger skips sometimes and doesn't look nice. Pretty colors though.

I like both ways. When I used the serger like they do in store bought items I use the wooly thread and the serger foot plate that turns under the edge. The wooly thread in both the bottom loopers and then a thicker thread in the needle works nicely and does a complete fill. This is a pretty placemat.

I do this when I'm in a bit of a hurry and it's fine for the most part. Probably find that woolly nylon will make it just a little better because it will cover. By the way, love the design and the fabric

I personally prefer binding. Serged edges are not enough dressy for this type of work, look finished too quickly even if it is a very beautiful work.

I'm with Pignada - I like the binding best for an elegant piece like this. But it was worth a try as it is much faster. The stitchout looks great.

I think using the really fat wooly nylon would have given you the coverage that you wanted. There are also some threads by Madeira and probably others that are very thick and shiny for this type of edge. They don't roll and you will spend an amazing amount of money getting enough to finish a bunch of mats. They look nice in the cover sticth of you can do that. Love the embroidery!!!
