I will caution you as you are new to embroidery -- stay away from sites that give or sell illegal/copyright designs. If they are giving away or selling Disney designs for a dollar -- leave the site. Those sites are often a great place to get a computer virus.

Hi Betty and welcome to cute, this site is the best place to start because it is a wealth of information and cuties are always anxious to help. Ask any question and someone will try to help. The years of experience gathered by the many cuties on this site will never be surpassed by any other IMO,

Welcome to Cute, Betty!!! Cute Embroidery, where you are now, is the site with the forum. But the owner also has a number of "sister sites" that are also very good. AmazingEmbroideryDesigns.com, Adorable Applique, Cute Alphabets, Cute Cross Stitch, you might want to check those out as well. "Best sites" is kind of a loose term, I guess, because it depends on what you're looking for. Do you do a lot of "baby" and "kid" things for grandkids, or are you more into artistic classy designs, do you want stuff for t-shirts,or quilting designs? That's why "best" is hard to define. I have no kids or grands, so no interest at all in baby or kid designs. But there are many in this Community who do, and will be glad to tell you the sites with the cutest and best digitized kid designs. I think besides the Cute sites, Embroidery Library has the hugest selection of designs, and they're always well done, and they have a lot of sales. Go over there right now and join the Christmas Club, there are usually a bunch of sale designs exclusively for Christmas Club members, as well as the regular sales. Urban Threads is another of my favourites, incredibly well digitized, but a lot of the designs are young, punk, "edgy"--that's the kid in me--they're so different I love them. Stitch Delight often has dollar sales, and she does an incredible amount of Free Standing Lace, as well as other designs. In general, shop around before you start laying out a lot of money for designs. There's a lot of free stuff out there, and sites usually have sales, you really don't need to pay $50 for a design CD.
If you're new to embroidery, be very aware of copyright laws. Easy way to remember it is "if it's famous and your grandkids want it because they saw it on TV, it's copyright and licensed and you can't have it unless you pay big bucks for it." People who digitize Disney, NASCAR, NFL, any movie or cartoon character and sell or give away the designs without having paid a license fee to the owner of the character or logo are breaking the law. If you download that design, you're breaking the law. Please don't. If you have any question about that, just ask. If you don't feel comfortable asking in the public forum, go to "inbox" at the top of the page, a click will take you to private messages, you can ask any one or all of your moderators here. Also, as a newbie to this hobby of ours, please read the "terms and conditions" of this website, and every other website you go to. You need to know what the digitizer will let you do with that design. Some won't let you sew it for profit, some won't even let you sew it for a craft bazaar at church, some don't care if you make a thousand dollars sewing their designs. But the "terms and conditions" of the website will tell you that. And every one will tell you one thing in particular: when you get that design file, the ONLY thing you can do with it is to sew it out. It's yours to use, but it doesn't belong to you, it belongs to the digitizer. You can't under any circumstances copy it and send it to somebody else, even if you got it for free. You can direct someone to the website where you got it so they can go there and get it too, but you are breaking the law if you send it to anyone yourself, and nobody but the digitizer can send you an embroidery file either. I don't mean to belabor the point, but sometimes nobody tells new embroiders these things and then they get into sticky situations. Personally, I avoid sites that are only giving things away for free. A website costs money to maintain, if they're not selling anything at all, where's the money coming from? Nobody's that nice. Those are the sites where you may pick up viruses, malware, trojans or worse, because they're getting money out of your bank account sometimes, instead of selling designs. Have GOOD antivirus protection on your computer, and don't just click on everything you see. The Cuties can give you lots of advice about good sites for the kinds of designs you're looking for, and they keep excellent track of sales and freebies. You really are in good hands here, with a friendly and trustworthy group. Hi, Betty, and welcome to Cute. I have been machine embroidering for many years, and you will find a lot of free designs by digitizers wanting you to sample their work. I only buy designs that truly "grab" me, so to speak. Embroidery Library has gotten most of my money for designs, and they have great sales on a regular basis, along with monthly free designs. Most reasonably priced, good quality designs, as well as a wealth of info, tutorials, etc. there! Sign up as a member to receive notice of all their sales.
Oregon Patchworks is another website that is a host to many, many embroidery sites that have beautiful, quality designs. You will find lots of freebies as you browse these sites, and enjoy viewing many types of designs by different digitizers.
