Happy New Year! I would like to know what types of table toppers you like best. Would it have batting? Cutwork, 1 layer? How big would you make it for a good sized dining table? Are there any fabrics that are better than others. Do you always put the design in the center, isn't that where the vase or centerpiece is? What does heirloom bring to mind? Thank you very much for your opinion!

I love all toppers but in answer to your question I prefer batting and a runner mat I like long and around 14 overall wide. Smaller mats like for hot dishes or flowers I prefer 6 to10 ins. I don't always like design in middle if using for vase or centerpiece can't see it anyways. But if used for hot food or bowl that is temporary and I might leave mat or mats on table then design to go with my choice of mood,holiday whatever. I like 1 layer more for like scarf on dresser or end table. Now if heirloom something looks beautiful and poured you just know ones heart is poured into it.

I love tabletoppers...with batting and quilting mostly...I find myself making square ones...then I put then on "Point" or the "Diamond" on the table...it can hang over the sides or not...round, oval, square, rectangle table...doesn't matter...it will work with basically any shape table...sometomes I have a design in the center, sometimes not...sometimes I will run a border type design around the "center"...and leave the true center open with the "border" type design running around...sometimes I put a design in the center and run a decorative border around the edges...Heirloom beings to mind...Battenberg Lace...mono-color designs that are usually small components that you build a design with, Lace overlays...lots of different things, these are just a few...

I like the square, how big should it be like 32 x 32?
I usually go for 36x36 or 40x40...depends upon how much hangover you want...or if you even care...

I just finished making my first table topper and I ended up not using any batting. . . I didn't like the thickness, even though it was a thin batting. So, after sewing the top, I lined it and quilted through the 2 layers. It turned out very nice and layed very flat on the table.

I am novice at quilting, but I like the look of a quilted runner or square. So far I have tended toward tapestry type fabric and damask with cotton backings. Where I place designs on these ( especially damask ) is usually in the corners. I like these fabrics to embroider on as they tend to be somewhat heavier and take to some patterns better than quilting cotton... which I have trouble with at times...probably because I don't like the look of heavy stabilizers behind. When I think of heirloom the first thing that comes to mind is cutwork.
