I'm thinking of putting a padded dish drying mat under my machine so it won't be so noisy. Anybody have a reason why I shouldn't do it? Is there anybody that has done it?

That's a great idea Sewmom. My machine sits on the Horn table lifter and as I've got the Brother on there at the moment (it's a Husqvarna that usually sits there and fits better) it is a bit noisy too. I've just put a hand towel under there, but something permanent sounds good to me. You go for it!

That sounds reasonable. I have a piece of the clear drawer liner under mine so it doesn't "walk" around the table top anymore. but that does nothing to reduce the noise level. Do let us know how it works for you.

Sounds like a good idea. I bought poster board and cut it in half and placed it under my machines. Works great. It does cut down on the noise considerably. Hugs, Mary

I covered a piece of board with wadding and calico. Quilted it. And put that under my machine, Have had it for years. Made it longer than the machine and the thread stand sits on it as well, and all my bits and pieces. Stops them from sliding about. Shirley

Tried the waffle shelf liner and it really helped and then added a vinyl foam placemat on top of the shelf liner. Calmed the noise down considerably.

Good ideas. I was considering the waffle liner too so it wouldn't slip around. It doesn't slip now bit I'm thinking the padding I bought would make it slip.

Lots of thoughts here - might have to try one of them..... Mine does not walk but is on a plastic formed table and is not exactly quiet!

Mine is in a "great room" so I'm near the dining room, kitchen, and TV. The most complaints are from TV and embroidery at the same time.

Thanks Sewmom... I was just complaining about how loud my machine sounded. I am so going to put a waffle shelf liner under it.

The foamy "Chef's mat" that Wal-Mart carries are an inexpensive alternative also.If not try the shelf liner as suggested(costs a lot less) or the padded stove mats they carry also. only $5.00. Both work great. No walking or noise.

I did much the same as Shirley I have a self made pad under it along with the slip proof liner, if you look closely at my avatar you will see that I have embroidered on it to make it look pretty too. Or you can click on the pic to get a better look & you can see the liner is there

Unless your machine sits up on 1/2" or more feet, it is being ventilated someplace besides the bottom, so whatever you want to put underneath should work very well.

I use a selfhealing Cuttingmat under my Machine.It muffles the Noice and the Machine does not move.[Quiltersmat] Hugs,Ursula

Does it lessen the vibration at all? I can't leave anything on the table like my journal or laptop because of that.

I made a mat using draw liner then covered it with quilted cotton , I made it so that it had pocket that hang over the front great for scissors extra feet, un pickers they are handy little pockets . Cathy

I have tried it with a mat and without a mat. The mat that I use is a Kitchenaid mat. It does help. Kitchenaid put out a mat that was used to lay on top of the cookkie sheet pans. It is neopreme. And you place cookies or what ever you want on top of the mat. And it goes into the oven. I have tried to find another but I have had no sucess. I am sure you will find the right thing for you too! I bought one of the new type small bathroom mats-the kind w/squishy foam underneath the terrycloth and it was great-no sliding and jumping around and it seemes to be quieter.

I tried the dish drying pad and did sone regular sewing and my machine was swaying up and down. It didn't slip or bounce off the table but I think it likes a firm surface better. I'll have to experiment more.

I went to the local office supply store (Staples) and purchased a mat that is used under typewriters to cancel out some of the noise. Works great under my Brother!

Our bedroom is under my sewing room and I like working on my projects at night. Two years ago, I tried a foam floor mat (kids foam play mat) under my machine and it cut the noise dramatically. My husband can sleep no matter how late I stay up working (playing). I now have a cut to size mat under all my machines.
