Any ideas from anyone please? I have a old computer that has quite a few embroidery designs on all in PE 5. I upgraded to PE8 a while ago which is on my laptop. I decided to remove the designs I wanted to keep from the old computer but this is where the problem started. I put the card reader into the computer and had difficulties. Eventually I got a design open and the words appeared that I needed to upgrade the security device and unless I did I would only be able to use it for 20 times. The old/ancient computer is not attached to the internet and has not been for years and am unable to do so. I have used my card reader in a number of computers/laptops over the years and not had this problem before. Until recently ( the past year) I have still used the computer to create designs with no problems. I would like to save more than 20 designs so help and can anyone help please. The best advise I can give you is to call the Denton Sewing Center in Denton, Texas and ask for Andrea. She is their computer guru and I would think she could be the one to help if anyone could. She has helped me out of many computer issues and they are wonderful people at that store.

Have you tried using a Usb stick?
Place it in comp, let it come up, to show you it is active.
Open another Windows Explore, take the route to you design stash.
Open this and do a hightlight of the designs, if they are in a folder...right click the folder and drag and drop it on your usb stick.
Then check the usb to see if you are good to go; if you see the designs. You can close the usb device, safely remove it and transfer the designs to where ever you want them. If I didn't explain this clearly enough, let me know I'll try again. Or maybe someone has a better way. Good luck, Leaha

I don't want to confuse the issue, since my computer knowledge is pretty poor but what Leaha has suggested does sound logical. I assume that the card reader relates to your PE8 in which case you would have to transfer each file individually. The USB route does seem to be the way to go. I would also suggest that a PM to Rescuer may be worthwhile. Hope you get it sorted.
Dennis I think the PM bit is a great idea. The computer works with floppy discs (yes its that old) and my Galaxie had floppies too. So I was putting the designs onto floppies so I could put them via a external floppy disc drive onto my newest computer. Oh the joys of technology

Geez, this is a heart-stopping moment. I may be on the wrong track here, but is it possible for you to save your designs onto a USB stick and then transfer them to your new computer and open them with your new programme? Hope you overcome this problem. Let us know how you get on.

I would try as the others have suggested. Transfer via a USB stick. Can't see why this will not work. Best of luck. Shirley

... if the USB stick idea doesn't work, can you write all your designs to a CD or DVD ? Or do you have an external hard drive? Hope you can figure out a solution, that is very scary to think of losing your designs! Good luck!!!! Flowers to everybody!

Thanks for this. The piece that I used to use to connect my usb sticks got trodden on recently and the computer will not accept the latest usb device :( but I will try copying the designs onto a CD so thanks for that idea

I got the same message when I grabbed my PE Basic card box by mistake and accessed my PE-5 program. There is evidently something built into the box/software that tells when it is not compatible. Now, you still have PE5 installed on the old computer, and you are using the version 5 box--right? I don't know if 8 comes with a box reader..and you did not put 8 into this old laptop? The I would certainly go to the Brother site and get an update for the box...did you update your software to 5.61? There is a driver update for the box as well. Failing to remedy, what I would do is uninstall v5, go to Brother site and download the updated software complete. You will be told when to connect the box to verify and authenticate. From that point you will have a 'like new' program--move all your designs to a folder that you can then move to a flash drive, then transfer to your new computer.. However, I am not sure the designs will be compatible with your new PE8..worth a try--just be sure your program is set to read "all designs" until you can reformat them one at a time. I hope I have not confused you..if I'm guilty of that, I will stand in a corner. Your situation not critical!

I hope I did not get confused..but were you using the v5 box to transfer the designs into the new computer where you have installed v8? UH UH..can't do that! Not w/o the matching program being installed. Seriously, if I am confusing you even more holler loudly and call my name in vain. haha I'll try to be clearer.
Hi and no you are not confusing me. I have always used the same card reader as its just the softwear that is updated with a new disc. I have transferred many designs from one computer to another wit no problems until now.
