I don't see the advantages of adding a watermark. If someone took your picture to convert it to a design, auto-digitising would be useless, no way you can get a reasonable design if you don't start with a vector image. And if they would take the time to digitise manually the watermark would not interfere with the process. It would be a different matter for clipart.

What does make sense is adding your initials or something like that in the embroidery design. I add MNR in the underlay. They'll have to do quite a bit of work to look for it and remove it.

To me I think it means to keep someone from just copying the image and using it for whatever purpose so they can't share the image as theirs? And that's before it goes to the digitizing stage. That way they can't claim the image as theirs. I've seen some sharing images on facebook that isn't their image to share and that's what I thought it meant.

It is just a sad state that you must try to think several steps ahead of those people who will try to steal anything they can. If I ever do get to the point of digitizing designs I will surely take the advise from mops and learn from her expertise and include my initials or some other identifying mark into anything I create. Even then there will likely be people who steal the design and use it to create the design just for themselves with no intent of trying to sell the design, but that is still stealing.

I just wish that there was a way to protect yourself fully, from any amount of theft.

I agree with Martine...don't think a watermark would really serve your purpose...but marking your digitized designs by hiding your initials or other symbolism..that's a great idea.
