Nora's 1st birthday quilt...finished...yea!!!!- I don't pretend to be a 'quilter', but I am rather pleased, that I was able to do this,on time , and love the finish result. This is my second very large quilt to make, from start to finish. I pieced it and quilted it on my regular sewing machine, altho it was hard to quilt starting in the center, and having half of the quilt in the 'hole' of my machine. I only had 2 clamps to hold my roll, so I had to keep rolling and moving the clamps. (((Does anyone know where I can get more of these METAL clamps? )))) Most of my blocks were made with my fabric given to me by the elderly lady, remember? #4 getting started on blks #5 getting started to quilt and #6 pin,pin,pin #7 going though the 'hole' #8 old woman (me) machine quilting #9 also makes a nice table cloth-lol #10 metal clamp, does anyone know where to buy these ? #10 Last but not least, the one it was made for..little Nora- I do want to thank the Cuties for encouraging me, sewilso and dragonflyer. I appreciate all your advice and putting up with all my questions. Hope you like the results as much as I do.-Toogie ps.I would like to make a label/patch to hand sew on the back, with info. I would like a very small pinwheel like these (see close-up of #4), to go in the corner or corners of my label. Would one of you digitizers be willing/interested? I am able to do the lettering, like I did Calebs, and I have satin stitched shapes. The pinwheel would probally be better in a filled design, than applique, since it would have to be quite small .

Well, it wasn't much time,in a way, but I do know what you mean. I usually get the children a small size,wooden rocking chair for their 1st b-days or something special.(my son is 44 and he still has his) When I asked Noras mom, if she wanted me to get Nora her chair now (they are crowded for room and intend to build,hopefully soon) she said well....what I would really like is for you to make a quilt for her.I was thinking, I made her a crib quilt. Mom says no, a lg quilt for her new bed when they build. I am thinking twin or full. No, full or queen,as Nora will share a room with Avery for the first few years. She told me 6 weeks before b-day and I finished 2 weeks before. I repeat, "Yea"-lol

Whether you "pretend" to be a quilter or not, I think you are great!! You did a fantastic job! Are you hooked yet? For me, quilting is my Prozac, and all other stress related "medications"!! I love it, and the results are so incredibly satisfying. I love the idea of making a full sized quilt for a little one. They get to grow up with it, and it is something that is theirs forever. Something very special made especially for them. A treasure!
As for the clamps, there are two places that you will be able to find them. They are sold as pants clips for bicyclists. Keeps the pants legs from entangling themselves in the bicycle chain. But you may also be able to find something very similar in a hardware store in the plumbing section. There they are called hose clamps. They come in dozens of sizes, so you can pick out which one suits you best. The hose clamps will be substantially cheaper than the bicycle stuff.
Personally, I don't like the metal scraping against my sewing machine. I also quilt all of mine on a regular home machine. What I do is roll it up, and then using a long needle and some sturdy thread, I run some stitches through the roll and tie them off. It only takes a couple of minutes, and is very secure.I stitch every 18" or so, and tighten down the knot pretty snug, so that I don't have a floppy frustrating mess.
Good luck with your next quilt. You did such a good job on this one; why stop now? :)

I am just hooked on SEWING or making anything, period. It does relax me,when I don't have a deadline...Speaking of treasure, her mom likes old things,heirloom sewing, etc and wants Nora to appreciate it too. I did start out like you did by sewing my roll, but I ended up just using the two clamps. My wrist did give me pains tho,because I had to keep adjusting...The next quilt ?...I guess you understand why I am looking for those clamps-LOL-lol

It is HUGE and heavy. Mom won't have to worry about them rolling out of the bed, it weighs them down.lol-and it is warm. I freeze all the time and am cold right this minute,but I sure warmed up wrestling this thing-lol

It's beautiful Toogie and I've been sewing patchwork quilts for over 25 years and do not quilt. I send mine to a professional quilter with a longarm machine. I don't like putting all that weight through my machine, kudos to you for doing it the hard way. It's gorgeous, love Chris

I wish I had a long arm machine!!!! My wrist was hurting before I was through. Also, if wishes come true..... I wish I had a grace quilting frame, to go along with the long arm, and a very large room to put it all and work in.-lol lol- Thanks Chris-Toogie

What a beautiful quilt. You should be proud of yourself. Love the photo of the quilt in the machine in photo 8. The metal clamps look almost the same as the bike clips my hubby used on his trouser legs to stop his pants getting caught in the chain. I would think you should be able to buy the clips at any quilt shop. Shirley

I use bike clips - got them at our local bike shop.
I also use bike clips. Walmart has them.

Thank you Jerrilyn. I told Ashley to go in my statch and pull out what she liked. There were a few I omitted, thinking they wouldn't look as well, but I do think it looks good and colorful for Nora. I just wish Lillian would have told me about the duck tape. It would have saved me a lot of sleepless nights.-lol

Thank you. It is a very easy design and I would make it again,in fact I have sqs leftover I could start with-lol- I had no pattern but I cut my sq 6 inches, put RST, color to white.I drew a line across from corner to corner diagonally, then stitched 1/4 in away, down both sides of line. I then cut at my line. Wa-la you have 1/4 of a block, do this 3 more times, sew altogether and you have a 10 1/2 in blk. (You already know all this I am sure, as I know you quilt, but am letting others know that don't quilt.) Thanks again for looking. I made the pinwheel design b/c Nora is fasinated with these whirly jigs.

worthy-you do it twice I think, to make a lg block. (No reason I have leftovers -ha ha) When you cut down the line, you actually have 2 smaller sqs, say the top half,so if you do it one more time it would make the bottom half. I think I am right, now.-lol- the prairie points were my 6 in sqs folded once, WST, like a triangle. Then folded like a triangle again, pressing each time.

Thank you very much and she is a darling. This is the day she learned to walk, and she has her hawaiian dress on, her aunt brought back from Hawaii a few weeks ago. We got a kick out of her crawling. She crawled very fast on all fours, but when she had a dress on, which was often, she crawled with one knee and the other foot. She didn't put that knee down,so she wouldn't catch her dress, and she still was quick!-lol- My 85 yr old BIL said he never saw a baby get around so fast.

Metal Clamps I purchased several sets at Hancock fabric store, got some plastic ones at Hobby Lobby but like the metal ones best & guess what picked up another metal set in a bag with quilt scraps at a yard sale a couple or yrs. ago/Lillian
I thought when I posted the duck tape photo, someone would laugh at what I came up with, but if you don't know how you are going to put it all together, you have to think of something.-lol- I have had these metal ones for years, don't even remember where they came from, and I really like them. My sister looked on Amazon and found plastic ones, but I was afraid they would break easily. I like garage sales, lucky you! Thanks jerrib. I guess I work better or quicker, under pressure, but I told my husband I hadn't planned on spending my summer vacation from school, just quilting. It took a month up !... Have you used these plactic ones ? Just wondered if they worked well on a larger sized quilt. The half of the quilt would hardly go through my machine hole.

As you probally can see, I have an open floor plan, so I can take over the house-lol- If he (meaning hubby) would let me dismantle the bedroom I displayed the quilt here in, I told him I would have room for a Grace Quilting frame and could get a long arm machine! Hi Again: I posted a picture of the first two rows of the quilt I am working on. Its a memory quilt for my oldest GD, who graduated in June. Just waiting for her to return from her trip through Europe, planned by her school. Then I will get the center final picture.

Ah, you have me blushing, even at my 'age'. I think my daughter wanted Nora to have something made by me, since I won't always be here, she will have something I made especially for her. She will also understand how much I love sewing.

OH WOW!!! I just LOVE the triangle border!!! So gorgeous!!! I just love everything about the quilt. The simplicity of the design, the choice of colours. I am so impressed.
I've attached a picture of the first quilt I made. This I was determined to get made before my daughter was born. I got the top finished the day she was born, and the base got completed a few weeks later. It won second prize in a quilting competition. This quilt near on killed me trying to feed it through the machine to stipple it, but I managed to do it. I call it "A Star is Born".

My daughter saw one on pintrest and told me that is what she wanted...but it was a crib size and this one is queen!
