Re bookmark - well the inevitable has happened, I have washed out too much of the WSS and now have a rather 'floppy' bookmark. Do you think that I can iron it with a little spray starch on the wrong side??

Possibly, but you could resoak it with some off cuts of WSS to put it back in!

Little trick I learned years ago with my crochet. After you get the right stiffness and shape spray it with clear acrylic paint. Will keep it cleaner and no moisture will get to it so it stays stiff. Works for me. Done angels, bookmarks, and all sorts of Christmas decorations. And you can buy Aleen's stiffener. Love that stuff.

Well, back in the "day" we used sugar water to stiffen our crochet doilies and tree ornaments...works like a dream...heat up some water hot enough to dissolve the sugar...soak your bookmark...let it dry...voila...and if you need to shape something...while it is wet...pin it to a cardboard in the shape you need it to keep and it will stay perfectly...or if it is a bowl or other shape, drape it over a bowl, cup or any shape that it needs to be...let it dry...it will be stiff as a board!

Back in the day as you say Kim, I used to starch my petticoats in sugar water. What a horrible thought.

my girlfriends mother used to use sugar and water to do her hair ,it was very stiff and the bees loved her lol

I made crochet snowflakes and used every day craft school glue with water, 1/2 and 1/2, dip, shape and dry. They were great!

I use snips of left over WSS in water and soak them in the solution. Granddaughter had a FSL dog for her key chain that looked a bit tattered. I handed her some Vilene and told her what to do. She forgot it in her jean pocket and after washing and drying her jeans certain areas where very stiff and stuck. She is still working on the jeans

Yes absolutely! When I started out I did all of mine with starch, as I did not like the feel of the vilene. Now I am use liquid goo to stabilize my organza and satin before embroidery and I do not rinse all of it away for some FSL pieces.
