If the original pattern was done with towels the side flaps may have been to dry your hands on.

The design is a Rebecca Ruth Design, and its just a hard laminate type 1 page front and back pattern. Fits in a notebook. If you aren't a quilter, and you decide to buy it, send me a message so I can tell you how NOT to pull your hair out when using your own fabric instead of their rulers and tea towels.
