I have been asked if I can make some pencil cases with names on. I have never made anything with a zip before. Are there any free patterns out there (with loads of instructions) for me to try before purchasing. I have actually told my friend 'no', but would love to try something like this. Thank you.

Sorry, should have stated ITH pencil case

Hi Airyfairy,

What size pencil case? I have just finished doing some that had to be big enough to hold a 30cm ruler. I made a pattern of 38 cm * 15 cm. bought 35cm zips for them. Overlocked one of the long sides, embroidered the design on and then attached the zip. stitched around the item and overlocked both edges together.

There is a link for free patterns and tute.

Regards
Nicky

Nicky - thank you for this. I have bookmarked it. I was really looking for a pencil case that I can make in the hoop. Welcome to Cute.

ITH pencil cases are a bit tricky - you could make one in 130 x 180 hoop, but you would have to sharpen the pencils a bit before you put them in!

And the directions are really good from this site.

Try Five Star Fonts too--they have tons of ITH designs too.

There is a free zip case ITH from Five Star Fonts for you to play with. It will not hold pencils, but you can learn on it before purchasing one.

designs by sick has them on sale for just 2 dollars, and here are free instructions, there is a freebie at sew forum but it is more of a cosmetic case size. From there you can move on to even more zippered projects. Just be sure you have plenty of nylon zippers and slow your machine down . Zippy bags are one of my favorite projects, sick has a nice zippered tissue holder too

After the first couple you'll be wizzing through them, helps if you have an additional sewing machine. Happy stitching, Joy in U.K.

Sew forum has some zipper cases, not that size probably, but I did see a 5x7. It might be good for practice though. Are you wanting something with rings to fit a binder maybe?
