UPDATE ON 5D DONGLE!
Just had a call from Maarten and he can get one but it has to come from America - so pleased but I've got to wait 2 weeks! It will only cost me $250.00 - I was expecting it around the $600.00 mark, so to say I'm thrilled is an understatement.
To those who wanted to know how it broke - I'll tell you how I did it. I normally have a white 4 holed Dongle/USB/flashdrive holder in my master computer and take it to my laptop (where I work on at night) - I was in a hurry the other night and just pulled out the 5D and put it in my laptop! Fatal decision! As I was packing it up to take to my priest's house (we were going through the music for Advent etc.) I knocked the laptop on my handbag and my handbag weighs a ton and it broke! Lesson learned, I'll never just put it in on its own again. Love Chris
I'M SO MAD WITH MYSELF!
Guess what happened to me today - my 5D Extra Dongle got broken - so I've been into Newcastle to my Husqvarna dealer Maarten and have ordered a new one. Don't know the cost as yet, but I'm guessing hundreds of dollars and I'm not sure whether they will suggest I go to the 6D now (! Bugger!!!!!! big time, Love Chris

Of course they will suggest you upgrade! Years ago when I broke a dongle it was $50 (US). Who knows nowadays. Hopefully not too much. Hugs. Nan W

Well, I was lucky Nan, they are going to get me a new one from America. I will always go through my dealer, I know it may be dearer, but I have the continued support of Maarten and have done for years. Love Chris

Toogie, it's a little flashdrive looking thing that is the actual security thingy for the softwear program. Can't use the program at all unless it's in the computer flashdrive port.
Oh my, so does that shut down the whole machine, or just a program you use?

Oh Chris! That is awful! Hopefully they will not break the bank with the cost. I am scared to death mine will break as it's for 3D!! I have it in a "connector" like thing that goes in & out instead of the actual dongle. I think I ordered it online. But I actually leave it in the back usb port of the computer all the time...where no one will hit it or mess with it! I KNOW I can't even get a new one if I break it! Interested to know what a new one costs, if you don't mind.

I do the same thing. It was suggested by my dealer. The only time I unplug it is if we travel and I take the laptop. Mine came in a little plastic case so I place it in it for travel.

Ouch! I do hope that you can get one at a reasonable price. The dealers do have us in a tight corner since so many of our machines are proprietary with software and hardware.

The same thing has happened to me some years ago, my dealer where i had bought my machine wanted 120€ for a new one, but fortunatlyI have meet another dealer at a exhibition, and he could have another dongle for free if I gave the broken dongle and the key of the 4D (is it the good word?), I have payed only the shipping

Didn't quite catch the shouting from you. Yes I am sure that you will have to pay quite a bit for this accident. Maybe you could get a replacement via ebay or are you covered by household insurance? Can one ask how it got broken? Anyway I certainly understand your frustrations.

In the US, my dealer now quotes $150 for a new dongle replacement. If you don't have the old one to trade in, you have to buy new software (they assume you're trying to copy and make the software available to someone else). A friend told me I should ask on the boards how many folks have them breaking and keep track - they seem pretty flimsy and I also had one break.

As Caroline said below, that should be covered on your house insurance. Explaining what it is and how much it will cost to replace will not be easy though!

A dongle shouldn't cost an arm and a leg if you have the broken one to turn in. After all, the expense is the programming of the software, not the little piece of hardware to enable it. Wishing you a good outcome.

I have 4D....but I was told that if the dongle broke...as long as I had the pieces...they would replace it no charge. So I would ask them about that for sure...or even go higher up in the company. At the price of the foolish things...they should either be indestructible or replaced for free. (imho) In the future, I will not pay what they want for 6D or 7 or 8!!! I will go with a program that doesn't require the dongle next time. I hardly had 4D any time at all when they "upgraded" and then 4D became obsolete. The cost does not justify what you're getting any more. Arrrgh!!! Don't get me started!!

So sorry to hear this Chris. I was told by my dealer that if I lost mine I would have to purchase the software program again. Like I was a new customer coming in to purchase software. I was also told too have mine insured for $2000.00 along with my entire sewing room which consist of a long arm plus 10 more various machines. Anxious to hear the out come of this.

As far as I know replacing a broken one is not very expensive. But they won't replace lost or stolen ones even if you have a police report of a break-in. A friend of mine had her dongle broken, it had 5D and 6D on it, she got a replacement but for 6D only - and 5D has a few things that work far better than 6D, so she wasn't very happy about that.

Hi Kim, yes, I was surprised that they didn't have any replacement parts at the store. Head Office for Husqvarna is on the Central Coast of New South Wales only about an hour and a half drive away and they didn't have one either! It has to be ordered from America. Go figure! Love Chris

Does this mean you can not digitize or you can not stitch? In either case I hope you get you dongle soon! Also it sounds like you are waiting to get 6D. I do not even remember hearing it came out?

I don't digitise Chris - I just sew out designs, but I cannot download anything new unless I have the 5D dongle in my computer. It's a special HASP key that Husqvarna/Pfaff have for their machines. Love Chris - and yes 6D is out already!!!!
