This is for Chris as some while ago she mentioned jacaranda trees. I took this picture when I was in Johannesburg last week. It is a truly beautiful specimen The tree belongs to my daughter's neighbour, taken from my bedroom window.

Years ago I read "The Jacaranda Tree" by H. E. Bates but had not a clue what colour the flowers would be or what the smell would be like. Thanks for the picture, it solved the first mystery.

I go past one every day on my daily walk and have never noticed a fragrance... I don't think they have one..
by mops 15 Nov 2014
Thank you, that solves the second question.
by airyfairy 15 Nov 2014
Quite right - they have no smell. Very messy though, especially after rain.

Jacaranda's are beautiful when in flower BUT oh the mess they make dropping blooms everywhere and the seed pods hurt the feet if you walk on them and watch out if your mowing, BUT as I said beautiful to look at.. Marian

So pretty. Sarah, what are those wires in the photo, on top of the wall?

I think that might be security fencing.
by airyfairy 16 Nov 2014
Unfortunately that is the way people live in Johannesburg. It is an electric fence surrounding my daughter's property.

Thanks for sharing! Now I can see how beautiful they are. Corrie,
the mother of my guest daughter from Pretoria, always promised to
send me pictures but never she did...but now I can see what she meant
when talking about the Jacaranda trees in bloom. Maria
Have a great Sunday

Also love them. When we were living in Alfaz Spain, we had one in our garden. However one night whit strong, strong wind 120 m/sec it broke down.
In Seville in Spain they have thoose trees along the streets. Seville in may is beautiful

Hi Sarah, sorry I didn't see this post till now (3 days later!!!!) This is a beauty, I've got one in my front drive. As it's 8.45pm Tuesday night I'll wait till the morning and take a picture of it. It was in full bloom last week and everyone is right so far - the mess the flowers make is unbelievable! Love Chris
