Hi everyone! It has been a while since my first HELP post but I'm close to being in business. Not really. Just got a machine. (a friend of mine is letting me use her machine so I can teach her how to use it) I am SO LOST! It's a Brother (disney) SD-270d. It's what she has so it's what I'll learn on, I guess. I've looked through pinterest and YouTube to find beginners help and I've found squat. Can anyone help with getting things started? I mostly want to do pretty monograms and eventually appliqués. Any takers? :)

You need design cards or a transfer system (P E Basic software with blank card & writer box) in order to transfer letters to machine. You won't be happy with the built in ones, and the prob is the 4x4 hoop. With software (some free and some costly or not so costly) you can combine your letters for monograms. I can share the manual with you, or you can go to the Brother site and download a PDF. I had the 270 briefly, but sold it about a yr ago. I did not like the threading system. I'm sure there are many who use this machine & will be happy to help you along!

Yeah, I can tell already that I'm not going to be a big fan of this but I promised I would figure the thing out and show her how to use it. Soooo, here we go. ;) I'm a bit thrown by the blank card and write box ordeal and obtaining the software. Do you know of any sites that I can learn about them/get them? thanks so much for your help!

P E Basic is a Brother software that consists of the card reader/writer & blank card that only works with .pes designs---which is your format with Brother machine. You install the software from CD, and access your designs on the computer, where you select and send to the card. Each time you write new designs, the card erases (but your computer still has the designs) You can also size up or down about 20% in the program. You can find it on Amazon, Walmart (on line), at Allbrands, and be sure to ck ebay. The cost will fluctuate--I've pd $80 on ebay, $105 at Walmart (if I sold a machine, I included the software when needed.) There is a very cheap program for merging .pes designs that would be useful for creating monograms--it's called CombineDsign at www.bowsandclothes.com. If you have digitized fonts (there are many free) you can merge into monogram with this program. There is a youtube showing how to use it. You first need to get the software for moving from computer to machine. Good luck--hope I've helped.

Are you prepared to say where you are as there may be someone who lives near who can help. I do have to say that putting 'Brother (disney) SD-270d' into google brought a selection of information up. I was never shown how to use a embroidery machine and taught myself. The screen on the machine gives loads of information which you follow. Just get a pile of fabric that you don't want anymore and hoop it up, choose a design and start stitching. Have fun. Mmm have just re read your comments and see you want to do monograms. If you are creating your own monograms you will need software to design them
