Hi ladies - update on my hubby's cancer. Well.....he ended up with stage 3 colon cancer and a total weight loss of 65lbs (29.5 k)! He wasn't a big fella to start with, so now I have to put him on a super high fat/calorie diet (over 3000 calories/day). I'm not used to cooking with cream, fat milk, etc. so this will be a learning curve for me. I have to get his weight up before he starts chemo in 3 weeks. Yep, we get to go through that lovely regimen every 2 weeks for the next 6 mos. This will reduce his risk of recurrence by 60%. Some of the chemo drugs will be administered at the clinic, some at home, so we will be doing a lot of driving back and forth to the clinic - thank goodness it's not more than 5 miles....
I always had a special place in my heart for anyone who had to go through this, but now I have a much deeper understanding and appreciation for what the true cost of this terrible disease is.

My husband was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 1994 went through the chemo, radiation and colostomy Did well, but had bad stomach pain
and the sores from the colostomy paste were bad.
ate well, but in 2005 nothing stayed down and what did came up/out

I am glad you had many years with him. I hope to have many, many more with my hubby. Things will progress and we will deal with any problems as they arise. As I pointed out in another comment, I have a special 'in' at the clinic as my sister works there, so I know he'll get the best possible care. Thank you for your prayers.

My husband passed from lung cancer. My prayers and sympathies are with you at this difficult time. It is a long hard road but with God willing, you will get many more years with your hubby. Stay strong! Hugs, Barba

I am sorry for your loss. Cancer is a terrible disease and affects far more people than those diagnosed. Families suffer as much (or more) than the patient. I am lucky as I have a very large extended family - many of whom have been through this - and we are all a bunch of cards so things are positive for now.

You are in our prayers. I know this is very hard for you but I know you will do everything possible to help him gain weight. The silver lining is that your meals are going to taste wonderful. Please keep us updated so we know how you both are doing. And be sure to care for yourself too. You need to eat well and rest too. Hugs to you both even if they are only cyber hugs.

I wish there was an easy way for me to transfer my excess weight to him :-) I will be cooking 2 meals - 1 high calorie for him and 1 low calorie for me - this will put my cooking talents to a real challenge. So far everything is positive, but I know that will change as chemo progresses.

My prayers are with you my husband was diagnosed 2 yrs ago with Rectal Cancer stage 3 we went through it all as well Radiation first then surgery then chemo. Pls make sure your doctors are really proactive as far as keeping on top of it after he is done. Ours were and found a tiny spot in his scar tissue a yr after we were all done. They gave him quarterly exams and kept an eye on his CEA (Blood Tumor Markers and that is what caught it. If you ever need to talk pls feel free to contact me Hugs and prayers from SC

Your DH and you also are in my prayers. You have quite a challenge getting him to gain weight, but I'm sure you will experiment until you figure it out. God's blessings on you as you are are now your husband's protector and caregiver.

You can go to GNC vitamin store...I think they have things that can help with the weight...don't forget the mashed potatoes and lots of gravy lol. i need to avoid those, however they are just to good...

Anything you're adding milk to, you can mix in some "extra" powdered milk for improved protein plus calories. Also, Google Cornell flour or Cornell formula if you are baking for him. Best of luck in fattening him up and keeping you healthy too! Hope treatment progresses well and will pray for him.

Dear Vida, my prayers will be with you as you go through this tough time. I'm sure with your good cooking skills you will be able to come up with some wonderful 'fattening' meals for you husband. My thoughts are with you both. I don't know if you get Oats So Easy where you are, but we found this helped my daughter when she felt like getting sick after the Chemo. It seemed to settle her stomach. Love Maureen
