My niece, or rather, my hub's nephews wife came today and wanted me to machine quilt this crib/baby quilt. She tried and was pinching the back with her stitches. She was ready to just trash it. I told her to leave it with me. First I ironed the folds out of the fabric, so that helped. Then I squared it up by trimming it. She just wanted it stitched from top to bottom, because the squares didn't run even, from side to side. I stretched it out on my floor like I did Nora's Queen quilt and duct taped it tight, layering with batting and top. Then I pinned, pinned , pinned. It didn't pinch anywhere but it looks twisted on the back. I did start in the center of each row and work down to edge. Do you think the back looks too bad?-Toogie

I knew someone with a keen eye for quilting would notice that. If I had trimmed it straight, with the way the design ran, it would have been cock-eyed. So to square it up I had to trim top and bottom like it is.

It is the backside because the front/top is smooth...she's not hard to please, just got frustrated with trying to do it herself. I told her it happens to us all. Sometimes we all have problems, leave it alone for a day, go back and everything goes smoothly.

a walking foot is a good quilting tool

I wouldn't want to buy it and then not be able to work with it. Me and a ruffler never got along too well-lol
No where close to the same. The walking foot just gives a greater area to pull the top and bottom at the same time as the machine sews. Mine has feet that move the top fabric through as the feed dogs on the bottom move the bottom fabric through the stitching area.

I think you did a great job with it. Even with a walking foot, I've had this happen. Made lap quilts for Christmas & got the "puckers" a bit on them. This turned out very cute for a little one! Your niece will be delighted with it I'm sure!

Thanks for telling me. The fabric isn't pinched or caught in the stitching, the green just looks twisted between the rows.She will be happy with it and glad she didn't throw it out.

Fantastic save! The back really isn't bad at all. Truth be told, I have the same problem with my backs when machine quiltilng. I'm sure this quilt will be loved.

I wondered about the twisted look of the back. One thing I can think of is that the stitching alternated top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top which would cause this twisted look. Just a thought. --Sandra

I think that you did a marvelous job. If your niece isn't happy (oh, she will be!) tell her that you will be able to raffle it off to your friends over here on Cute Embroidery. There are plenty of us that would love it! Now, if anyone wants to comment negatively on the back of the quilt this would be my response: The front is actually what we expect the world to see. The back, it is like a giant hug we snuggle beneath. Any wrinkles or twists are hugs. I mean, who gives a super straight hug anyway? It is good to feel loved ;-)
