A cot quilt I've made recently, one of three, but I want to do some embroidery on plain squares, instead of buying printed fabric, but I am having problems with applique, puckering on the base fabric, and this will not do for me !!

Gorgeous..Have you tried putting Stitch and tear at the back...That should help!!!!

I'm using Steam a Seam, but still having problems !
The puckering is so slight it may disappear when you quilt/Lillian

Hi Pat, I always do my embroidery, applique etc. on before I put the wadding and backing fabric on. This looks like a finished quilt to me and therefore you will see all the stitching on the back, but as Lillian has suggested it might dissipate when the quilting is done. Love Chris

Hi Chris, this quilt is finished, along with one in pink and one in blue. My system of working is:- cut out 35 6" squares, join them in rows of five across, seven down,cut the wadding and backing to fit , quilt in the ditch, and finally attach the binding. When I make another one, I want to put some applique animals on plain fabric, instead of using fabric already printed. So I have been thinking, for a long time! I think the satin stitch edging is the problem, looks nice, but causing the material to pucker. As I can't alter that on designs already digitised, I'm going to have a go at using fleece for the applique fabric and do the edging with a blanket, or E-stitch, the fleece doesn't fray, and if I attach some Steam a Seam to the back of the applique fabric before I embroider on it, I've got a feeling that I will have won! Will try my idea this morning, and if I am happy about it, everyone will see what I've done!!

This is beautiful! As Chris said this looks like a finished quilt. I agree with her. All my appliques or embroidery is done before the piecing. Hope you find a way. It is gorgeous.

Yes, this is a finished quilt, I didn't make myself very clear!
I've explained to Chris what I want to do when I make the next one, and when I am wide awake this morning, I am going to try out my idea of using fleece for the applique material, and using blanket stitch for the edging instead of satin stitches. I've got a feeling I've found the answer! I've got some designs from Embroidery Library showing how this is done, so fingers crossed !!!

If you are going to use Steam a Seam on the back of the fabric, you could use the fusible fleece that already has the glue on the back. You can get it by the yard at Joann's. I use the fusible fleece for my mug rugs and have no problems with it. I like the soft effect of this quilt!
