I've been making dresses for my g-niece, Miss Ella. I had found this little piece of eyelet at the thrift store and thought it would be pretty with a bit of cheater-smocking across the top (design from Skeldale House). <br /><br />

If you look to the left of the design, you can see that the gathers were "pushed" a little bit. If I do this again, I need to anchor the gathers down a bit before stitching (or maybe float some water soluable on top of gathers to keep the foot from re-distributing). All-in-all, I'm happy with how it turned out.

That is such a pretty design. ..nice colours and clever smocking idea :) so you embroidered first and then gathered right?

Gathered first, then embroidered over the gathers. I didn't put water-soluble over the top of the gathers, so the foot pushed the gathers aside at the start. Next time, I'll float something over the top to keep it even.
no elastic thread in the bobbin... but what a great idea to try!

Nice...did you have to gather the fabric first or ??? I have several of the Skeldale House smocked designs...but have never used any...I need to know more about how to use them...thanks...lovely!

Yes, I gathered the fabric first, then basted it to the hooped tearaway stabilizer. Next time, I will put water soluble over the top of the gathers to keep the foot from pusing the gathers to the side.
