has anyone tried 2 threads for a cross-stitch project? After Carolyn's success, I think I should try. I have a verse to do, not a big project, and it would look nice in thicker thread [but thick thread won't work, have tried and failed!]

I haven't done a cross stitch recently but some of the one's I have done stitched several times in the same direction which gives the same result - probably not a clear explanation. From memory some of the programs give you the option to choose how many times. I probably haven't explained too clearly.

You could do that. What I was trying to convey though was that some designs are digitized to stitch the cross more than once. Here is a quote from my Bernina program manual in the cross stitch section:
"You can adjust the density of any cross stitch by stitching it once, twice or three times. The number of ‘crossovers’ correspond to the values 2, 4 and 6 in the Threads list. You can change these values at any time."

I have digitised cross stitch designs for myself for thicker thread to look more like hand embroidery. I made the crosses quite a bit bigger. Why not try thicker thread and enlarge the design by 10%?
Squashing more thread into the same space by using double thread will probably make the design too solid and you will lose the cross stitch look.

thanks Sue. I have tried thicker thread, but it may have worked better with larger crosses. My machine wasn't too keen on it though, so reluctant to try again. Maybe I'll try ordinary sewing thread, cotton instead of the usual poly?
I've done that as well - looks good because it isn't shiny (for a change!)
